Our Red Lids are getting greener!
Taking one more step toward the goal of being “the greenest company in Southern Oregon,” Rogue Disposal & Recycling is making curbside recycling significantly more effective.
Several key recyclables (including glass bottles and plastic containers and tubs) which could not previously be placed in the commingled recycling “red lid” carts will be accepted from all of our recycling customers beginning February 1, 2012.
All types of glass bottles and plastic containers (such as yogurt, butter and sour cream containers, etc.) will be recycled via Rogue Disposal’s red lid commingled recycling program. In the past, these items have proven problematic to our company’s recycling program, because broken glass could not be safely separated from other commingled recycling items, and the lower quality plastic used to make tubs and jars could contaminate a batch of higher quality recyclable plastic. Now, we have found a way to overcome both of these dilemmas through collaboration with a new recycling partner.
In addition to the newly approved items for the red lid, motor oil will now be accepted on every regularly scheduled recycling day. Previously, motor oil was only accepted once a month on a designated schedule, but starting on the February 1, 2012 date, recycling customers will be able to include their motor oil with their regular curbside recycling on every commingled pick-up day of the month. Simply place used motor oil in one gallon plastic containers on the curb next to your commingled recycling red lid container. Current glass recycling customers may also choose to keep their small red glass recycling bins and place one-gallon plastic containers of motor oil inside of it on regular curbside recycling days.
Through these changes, we’re projecting that glass recycling, currently at 40%, will significantly increase, as will overall recycling with the addition of plastic jars and tubs. We announced these changes first on Facebook on the morning of December 29, 2011. These changes will be reflected throughout the website soon and printed notifications will also be distributed to all recycling customers.
Notes:
- Rural Rogue Disposal & Recycling customers who use a red bin instead of a red lid cart will also be permitted to combine glass items as well as plastic tubs and containers with other recyclables starting on February 1, 2012. Motor oil collection for rural customers will also take place every other week on the regular red bin recycle day.
- Current glass recycling customers not choosing to keep their small red glass bins for motor oil recycling may set them on the curb on what would have been their regular glass day in February to have them picked up and returned to Rogue Disposal and Recycling.
