Helping the Community Through Waste- and Recycling-Related Field Trips
Teaching kids about all aspects of the recycling stream and how they can do their part to reduce waste
One of the surest ways to get people to understand the importance of recycling is by starting the conversation when they’re young. That’s why we offer year-round educational tours for students — both at the Rogue Transfer & Recycling facility and Dry Creek Landfill. These behind-the-scene tours are meant to provide working knowledge of how the waste stream works and how students (and their families) can do their part through recycling.
Inspiring future environmental stewards
When it comes to trash and recycling, Denise Barnes knows the ins and outs. As the Recycling & Community Outreach Coordinator for Rogue Waste Systems, she's spent more than 30 years leading school tours to these fascinating facilities.
During the last school year, she guided 35 groups of students through these sites, and this school year is shaping up to be even busier. Schools from all over the valley, including charter and homeschool groups, can take advantage of these unique no-cost learning opportunities. Whether it's a group of curious kindergartners or a class of inquisitive high schoolers, tours are tailored to their age, learning level and interests. The average class size is roughly 30 students, along with a teacher or leader and field trip chaperones.
For younger students, Denise keeps things simple, focusing on the basics of recycling and waste reduction. As the students get older, the conversation goes deeper, exploring topics like the recycling process, the environmental impact of waste, and even potential career paths in the industry.
“There are so many myths around recycling and landfills and it’s great to be able to explain how things really work,” she says, noting that debunking myths and misconceptions is one of her favorite things. "I also love it when I hear the kids talking behind me as we are walking, and they say 'this is way more fun than I thought it would be!' I am proud of the work we do and I love showing it off!"
Offering these educational tours is another way Rogue Waste Systems demonstrates its commitment to the community. By witnessing firsthand the complex process of waste management, students are empowered to make informed choices and take action. These interactive learning experiences not only teach students about the importance of recycling and waste reduction, but also inspire them to become responsible environmental citizens.
